I did enjoy his last E.P., but I was unsure what to expect of After Hours since Weeknd tends to experiment with new sounds and different genres. It looks like we don't have any Filming & Production for this title yet. I walked away not remembering much of that album, outside of the title track. Starboy didn’t impress me all that much.

A lot of the time, Weeknd is accepting the blame for all the things that he and his ex-lover are experiencing. It gives you the vibe that he’s really going through a mental breakdown. “Alone Again” starts the album off and right away you can hear just how damaged he really is.

Three tracks in a row of “Snowchild”, “Escape From LA” and “Heartless" let you know how rugged he can be at times. Even it is simple bars like “You try with me so many times, yeah / You're cryin' out behind the smiles / And I can see right through the lies.” He knows whoever he is singing about is not happy and it's all his fault. After Hours also showcases his lyrical ability and how savage he can be. Diving deep into tracks like “Hardest to Love” and “Scared to Live” he expresses his deepest issues and regrets. Nothing seems to actually work though the thought of heart-break is still on his mind. It’s a dark and depressing experience where Weeknd paints a vivid picture of what solves his issues: sex and drugs.

This lyric, “You don't love him, you don't love him / You don't love him if you're thinking of me / You don't love him, you're just fucking / You're just fucking, it means nothing to me” is the equivalent of the repetitive meme “everything is fine, I’m fine.”The production on this album is climactic, but each dramatic sound has a different taste. It gets to a point where he is talking about a lover and says “But if I OD, I want you to OD right beside me.” Then you have “Repeat After Me” where he is convincing himself and this woman that the man she is having sex with is not who she loves. He questions his religion and uses drugs to mask it. “Faith” gives concern about Weeknd on just how much he is losing his grip on the reality of his situation. The transition from the bridge on “Escape From LA” speaking on how all women from LA look the exact same yet he still having sex with them to “Heartless” is almost hilarious. In the second half of the album, you can see the delusion start to kick in.

While being locked in the house, the sad boy hours are up and running at breakneck speed. From the sequencing to the amazing singing, this album is his best. The Weeknd tells the story of a man who is going through every level of sadness you can think of. Top that off with the famous vocal-echoes he continually uses, you get this art.
